Heights Boys Clinch Title with Win over WMC

The Muskegon Heights Academy boys basketball team clinched the Lakes Eight Conference Championship on Wednesday with a 71-46 home win over Western Michigan Christian.

The Tigers are now 8-1 in conference play with one game remaining. The Warriors were in second place coming into Wednesday's game and drop to 5-4 with one game remaining.

Muskegon Heights led 17-13 at the first stop, 32-18 at intermission and 46-30 going into the final period.

Owen Varnado led the Warriors with 12 points, followed by Kellen Mitchell with 11 points, 7 rebounds and Nick Moser with eight points. Tyler Somers pulled down 10 rebounds.

"We had some really nice games from several players tonight," said WMC head coach Kurt Gruppen. "In the end, the pressure and style of play that Muskegon Heights plays with was too much for us. They are playing very well right now and that is the reason they are the conference champions."

The Warriors host Manistee on Friday for their final game of the regular season.
