WMC Splits with Newaygo

Western Michigan Christian split a non-conference doubleheader with host Newaygo on Wednesday. The Warriors took the opener 9-1, while the Lions bounced back with a 9-2 win in the nightcap.

GAME 1: WMC 9, Newaygo 1

Michael Kamps was the winning pitcher for the Warriors, going six innings and striking out three, while Jake Moser added one inning in relief, striking out two.

Tyler VanBeek led the WMC offense with two hits and three RBIs, while Brant Zeerip added two hits and Nathan VanderWeide had a hit and scored three runs.

GAME 2: Newaygo 9, WMC 2

Cam Beisel led the WMC offense with one hit, one RBI and one run scored.

"We were very patient at the plate in the first game, drawing nine walks and banging out nine hits, as well,” said WMC head coach Chris VanHekken.

"The second game, we had some hard-hit balls, but they were just right at their defense. Newaygo hit the ball well in the second game, so give credit to them.

"Tyler had a great day hitting, especially in the first game for us. I brought him in after we got really slim on pitching the second game, and he did very well, throwing four innings for us.

"Defensively, Nic Moser made two diving catches in the outfield and Jamo Goorman also made a great diving catch of his own. Cam Beisel was back behind the plate tonight and did a solid job for us, as well.

"Playing six games in five days is tough on our pitching staff, especially with a league doubleheader scheduled for Friday."

WMC moves to 13-7 overall and will travel to Orchard View on Friday.
