On a beautiful spring afternoon, WMCC softball hosted Grant for a doubleheader that featured a no-hitter by WMCC pitcher Maria Sanocki (MCC) and a homerun by WMCC catcher/shortstop Catherine Bradford-Royle (WMC).

In the opening game, Sanocki rolled through the Grant lineup, striking out 6 batters over five innings while not allowing a hit.  WMCC opened up a 5-0 lead in the first inning, added 3 more in the third, and cruised to a 10-0 win.

Sanocki also led the offense, getting two hits and driving in three.  Bradford-Royle and Taylor Mosher (WMC) each had two hits with Mosher also driving in three.

Grant put 5 runners on base but could not get any runs across the plate.  Makenzie Ritz handled the pitching for Grant, giving up 10 runs on 8 hits.

In the second game, it was Grant that jumped out to an early lead, scoring 7 in the first inning and holding a comfortable lead throughout the game.  WMCC pulled to within 9-4 in the middle of the fourth inning but Grant responded with four more runs to pull ahead to 13-4.  WMCC fought back at the end, scoring five runs in the last two innings but fell short, losing 14-9.

The WMCC offensive attack was consistent with every batter getting at least one hit.  Leading the way was Rebecca Ter Haar (WMC) with three hits, Sanocki with two hits and 3 RBI, and Mosher with two hits.  Bradford-Royle hit her fourth career homerun leading off the third inning.  In the circle, Sophie Hawke (WMC) and Sanocki combined to give up 10 hits and strike out 4.

The Grant offense came alive in Game 2 led by Carlie Stray with 3 hits and 4 RBI and Rose Castro and Allie Dubbink with two hits apiece.  Alissa Diltz picked up the win in the circle, pitching 7 innings and striking out three.

WMCC is now 3-3 overall and 0-0 in Lakes 8 conference play.

From WMCC Coach Jeff Nestell: “The first game was a lot of fun for us.  I don’t think any of us knew that Maria was working on a no-hitter.  She worked hard on her pitching over the winter and it was great to see her pitch so well.  Our bats were hot in the first game and we were able to string together timely hits and have a few big innings.  It was a different story in the second game.  A combination of not enough timely hits, baserunning mistakes and errors in the field cost us.  It was nice to see Catherine put one over the fence; she’s always working to be a better hitter.  In the end, we fell short but we know what we have to work on.”
