On Wednesday afternoon, WMCC softball hosted Shelby for a doubleheader and each team went home with a win.
The opening game featured 35 runs scored, 28 hits (14 for each team), 22 walks and 2 homeruns. When the dust settled, WMCC came out on top with a 18-17 walkoff victory.
Five times the teams scored four runs in an inning, but it was a 5-run 7th by Shelby that set up the dramatic win for WMCC. Entering the 7th trailing 16-12, Shelby put five runs on the board to take the lead. WMCC, who had scored in every inning except the second, received a leadoff walk in the 7th to Stephanie Weesies (WMC). Taylor Mosher (WMC) hit into a fielder’s choice which was followed by a walk to Rebecca Ter Haar (WMC). Catherine Bradford-Royle (WMC) reached on a dropped ball by the left fielder, loading the bases for Maria Sanocki (MCC). Sanocki hit a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home the tying run. Hannah Nestell (WMC) followed that with a ball to left field that was misplayed and Ter Haar crossed the plate with the winning run.
The 14-hit WMCC offense was led by Kelcea Waller who had three hits, including a 3-run homerun, and 4 RBI. Bradford-Royle, Sanocki, Hannah Pell (WMC), Weesies, and Mosher each had two hits. Sanocki, Weesies, and Mosher each drove in three runs while Nestell drove in two.
Sanocki picked up the win, pitching all 7 innings and striking out one.
Shelby’s 14-hit offense was led by Messell with 4 hits and 4 RBI. Also contributing were Payne and Eilers with 2 hits and 2 RBI each. Garcia went the distance in the circle, striking out 2.
In the second game, WMCC opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first, but Shelby responded with 7 runs in the bottom of the frame and went on to take a 9-3 victory.
Weesies and Mosher each had a hit with Weesies also driving in 2. Abby Sweetman (WMC) and Sophie Hawke (WMC) combined to pitch 4 innings, striking out 3.
Shelby’s offense included 2 hits for Peters and 1 hit and 2 RBI for Payne. Eilers went the distance, picking up the win while striking out two.
WMCC is now 4-4 overall and 0-0 in Lakes 8 conference play.
From WMCC Coach Jeff Nestell: “The first game was a well-fought game and a fun game. Every time we took a lead, Shelby came back and either tied it or got close. I was pleased with how the girls came back after Shelby took their first lead in the top of the 7th to get the walkoff win. They showed a lot of character on the field today. In the second game, we didn’t have an answer for Shelby’s offense. They have some strong hitters who can hit the gaps and put it over the fence. Overall, it was a good day with lots to build on: 6 hits and 8 RBI from our #8 and #9 hitters and Waller, a freshman, hitting a homerun. We’re looking forward to our first conference games later this week and next week.”
