WMC Starts Strong in District Loss to Montague

WMCC Softball competed in the district semifinal game on Saturday at Ravenna and lost to Montague 14-3 in six innings.

The game was scoreless until Montague’s Katarina Moreau and Madison Carroll singled back to back and were driven home on a Bailey Belinger double to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning.  Montague’s lead stood until the bottom on the fifth.  WMCC senior Hannah Pell (WMC) led off the inning with a walk, stole second, and came around to score on an infield single by Stephanie Weesies (WMC).  After moving up to second on a groundout, Wessies came around to score on a Rebecca Ter Haar (WMC) single.  WMCC took a 3-2 lead on an RBI triple from senior Catherine Bradford-Royle (WMC).

Montague responded immediately in the top of the sixth, plating 12 runs, highlighted by an inside-the-park grand slam homerun by Chloe Wynn.  Montague pitcher Belinger shut down WMCC in the bottom of the 6th to advance to the district championship game against Ravenna.

WMCC received hits from Bradford-Royle, Ter Haar, and Weesies.  Sophie Hawke (WMC), Maria Sanocki (MCC) and Abby Sweetman (WMC) shared the pitching duties, combining to strike out one.

WMCC finishes the 2018 season at 9-19 overall and 3-9 in Lakes 8 conference play.

From WMCC Coach Jeff Nestell: “I was extremely proud of how we played today.  When we took the lead in the 5th inning, I was so happy for our girls.  They gave their all today and I couldn’t be happier.  Our pitching kept their batters off balance for the first five innings and our defense was excellent.  In Montague’s big inning, they hit the ball hard and took advantage of some walks.  I wish the season had ended differently for our seniors; they were all a big part of the team this year.  It was an honor to coach this group of girls; they represented God and their schools well today.  I want to thank the girls, the parents, and the coaching staff for making this an enjoyable season."
