Coach Gould, "We knew this would be an uphill battle with Covenant, Saranac and Central Montcalm all being ranked in the top 15. They were most likely going to secure the three team berths to the State Finals. The real battle for WMC ensued in the wake of that as the best way to ensure an individual berth was to be a medalist. Matthias, Jonathan and Graeson put themselves in the mix right from the start and Matthias was able to stay in that group all the way to the finish and advance from what is probably one of the deepest D3 Regions in the state. The boys all ran great today - five PR's, in what was the last team race for us; is what you need to do if you want to try to advance in a Region like this one. Our lone senior, Jonathan Clausing has been threatening his PR all season, with more near misses than I can remember, so to see him break the 17:40 barrier in an attempt to extend his season was a moment to celebrate as well.  This team improved so much over the season, and the future is very bright with a lot of athletes returning next season, plus some expected freshmen that could have an immediate impact."

Coach Gould, "The goal from day one in August was to advance from this D3 Regional as a team for the State Final. In 2020, the last time we spent a season in D3, the girls were the first team eliminated, as we were fourth that year. So, it was a historic day as the WMC girls have never advanced a team to the State Final in cross country in D3. We knew Central Montcalm and Kent City would give us all the competition we would want. I felt we could have two medalists with Grace VanderKooi and Grace Folkema, and they delivered setting us up to do well in the team scoring. I knew Central Montcalm would have an advantage through runners one, two and three, but our team strength is in our "pack" with Eleanor, Bri and Alia. They ran very well, but Central Montcalm ran PR's at every position today and was able to get the win, I certainly congratulate them on the effort. We will prepare this coming week to try to be the best team from this Region at the D3 State Finals where our pack running may prove very helpful in the larger of field of athletes that is in the State Final."
